Set in a remote village in Oahu, the northern island of Hawaii, this film conveys an introspective view of death through the story of a man with terminal cancer. Throughout the four chapters, the dying man reflects on his past. As a member of a Japanese immigrant family in the U.S., he faced opposition from his parents when he fell in love with a Chinese-American woman. His wife died prematurely, and the grief subsequently caused a rift in his relationship with his children. Against the backdrop of Polynesian mythology, his dreams and fantasies become mixed with reality, and his painful family history is gradually pieced together. Through the lens of a unique culture, the film presents a contemplative description of memory, family and death. It does not rely on decisive events or dramatic moment, but captures subtle changes in weather conditions through music and image in order to make audiences consider death in a calm yet powerful way.
