The Strangler

France197093minColorFiction

Third feature film of Vecchiali. Emile, a little boy, runs away from home and meets a man at night. They walk together, and a crying woman appears before them. The man approaches her and strangles her to death before Emile’s very eyes. Emile in his 30s still cannot shake off the vivid memory and becomes a serial killer, believing that taking the life of women with wounded heart is a mercy. A mysterious man, Chacal, follows Emile and rummages through belongings of the murdered. Meanwhile, the detective Simon is certain that Emile is a serial killer and uses Anna to catch him. Behind the seemingly simple storyline are the complex emotional layers of characters: helpless murderer, irrational detective, and female victims confused between life and fate. In the beginning, the film seems to be like a typical American thriller but soon it breaks conventional flows of the genre. was dismissed by the audience when it was released, but its rerelease in 2015 received a lot of praise from the audience and critics.
